SA needs more nurses

South Africa is failing to produce more nurses to deal with its health demands, according to the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa). The trade union said the closure of some nursing colleges by the government, citing "funding" as a reason, did not assist in the production of nurses. Denosa called on government to re-open the training colleges that were closed, to accommodate those who were interested in pursuing this career.

The union said one of the contributing factors to the shortage was that school-leavers lacked interest in becoming nurses because of the unsavoury working environments that nurses face on a daily basis, and added that poor salaries also drove nurses away from the profession and the country.

Medicine Price Increases

Legislation has been passed recently allowing pharmaceutical manufacturers to increase their product prices by up to 13.2%. This increase can take effect anytime up to September 2009 and has the resultant effect that medicine prices will fluctuate until then.

Resolution Health Medical Scheme is working hard to ensure the interests of members are handled with care during this time of change. A medicine formulary is in place which is excluded from any form of co-payments. Members who choose to use medicines not on the formulary are welcome to do so but may be subject to co-payment. In the current circumstances of fluctuating medicine prices, it might be possible that the quantity of co-payment is different from month-to-month as medicine manufacturers establish a new price level in the market.

PMB +

PMB Plus is a short-term insurance product that is specifically designed as an add-on to Resolution Health's Fundamental Plan. The Resolution Fundamental Plan pays exclusively for Prescribed Minimum Benefits as listed by the Medical Schemes Act. Schemes are required to pay these PMB's, but it means that when a patient goes for a non-PMB procedure, he/she would have to pay the outstanding amount.

PMB Plus is a product that pays for certain of these non-PMB procedures according to a table of stated benefits. Attached are the policy wording and application form for PMB+. Please email or contact your consultant for further information.

Polygamy a headache for medical scheme

Although the Presidency is ready to accommodate Jacob Zuma and his large family, the ANC president is the sort of candidate medical schemes try to avoid.

With four wives - and two more to come - and a total of 18 children, medical aid schemes lose out when they insure a polygamist.

According to legislation, medical schemes are not allowed to charge members formore than three children, although they must still cover the medical expenses of the remaining children. Based on published medical aid tariffs, Zuma would pay about R10 000 for himself, his four wives and three children. The rest will be free and cost the scheme a significant amount to maintain on an annual basis.
